SUMMARY:Luton's Chalk Hills and River Lea - Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wildlife Trust BCN for a special film night at Luton Library Theatre\, featuring two locally made short films by Abi Spendlove and Greta Zabulyte celebrating Luton’s River Lea and iconic Chalk Hills. \nThese films aim to raise awareness of the rare\, beautiful and often overlooked natural habitats in and around Luton. They bring together inspiring digital storytelling with the voices of local people and experts who care deeply about these landscapes. \nThis evening also serves as a tribute to Dr Trevor Tween\, who appears in both films. We will take a moment to honour and celebrate his life\, passion\, and long-standing contribution to ecology and the protection of Luton’s plentiful green spaces. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the support of the National Lottery Fund\, Luton Borough Council\, Chilterns National Landscape and others who made these films possible. \nEvening Programme\n19:30 – 20:00 | Arrival & Welcome\n20:00 – 21:00 | Film Screenings: The Chalk Hills of Luton & River Lea in Luton\n21:00 – 21:30 | Audience Q&A & discussion \nTickets: £3.50 + Eventbrite fee (all proceeds help support the management of Luton’s green spaces). \nCome along\, discover the wildlife on your doorstep\, and connect with others who share a passion for Luton’s natural world.

SUMMARY:Ella Al-Shamahi (Work In Progress)
DESCRIPTION:ELLA AL-SHAMAHI: \nBECOMING HUMAN – WORK IN PROGRESS \nThis is the story of Homo sapiens… us \nElla Al-Shamahi\, palaeoanthropologist\, TV presenter\, explorer and stand-up presents a talk on our remarkable origin story. \nOnce upon a time we shared this planet with many species of human – it has been said that our world was a bit like Lord of the Rings. To start with we Homo sapiens weren’t that remarkable\, our origins were in fact rather humble and yet somehow today we are the only ones left. But we didn’t just survive against all odds\, we thrived\, innovated and travelled like no other species of human – becoming the explorer species who built cities\, iPhones and painted the Sistine Chapel. Our success was profound\, but how on Earth did it happen and at what cost? \nElla Al-Shamahi started studying evolution as a creationist and so she interweaves her own story demonstrating the power of tribalism not just in the past\, but also in the present. Expect a talk that draws on the latest discoveries\, heart\, humour and wild expedition stories. \nAl-Shamahi is a National Geographic Explorer specialising in searching for fossils in Palaeolithic caves in politically unstable\, hostile and disputed territories. She is the presenter of HUMAN\, a flagship BBC/PBS science series as well as other TV and radio shows. She is also author of a Times/Sunday Times book of the year ‘The Handshake: A Gripping History’
