SUMMARY:Heritage Open Day: Town Hall tours
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture\, and we’re celebrating by offering FREE tours of Luton Town Hall for the public. \nOpened in 1936\, the town hall that stands today is not the original. The first town hall\, built in 1848\, was burned down during the Peace Day Riots in 1919. The current town hall was erected in 1936\, and still stands in Luton town centre today\, complete with art-deco interiors and ornate committee rooms and chambers. \nOn this tour\, you’ll have access to areas of the town hall that aren’t often open to the public\, like the Silver Room\, Mayor’s Parlour (tbc) and the Council Chamber. \nThe tours will cover the history of the town hall\, Luton Borough Council and our civic heritage. \nTour information\nTours will last approximately 1 hour. Please note that children should be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. \nTours will run at 10.45am\, 11:45am and 12:45pm.  \nBOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. Book online here. \nGetting here\nThe closest car park is Luton Library Road car park (Library Rd\, Luton LU1 2NG). The town hall is approximately a 5 minute walk. \nIf you are travelling by bus\, please check which bus stop on your route is closest. This might be Luton Station Interchange\, which is approximately a 7 minute walk. \nMeeting point\nPlease meet at the reception entrance on Upper George Street. This is the entrance with the glass automatic doors. \nAccessibility and Blue Badge parking\nThe tour will include some stairs\, however lift access is also available. Accessable toilet facilities are located on the ground floor. \nBlue Badge parking is available at Library Rd\, Luton LU1 2TR. The town hall is approximately a 5 minute walk\, which is flat across St George’s Square\, and with a slight incline up Upper George Street. There is step-free access into the main reception. \nFull accessibility information can be found here: https://www.accessable.co.uk/venues/luton-town-hall \nIf you have access needs\, please let us know when booking so we can make suitable arrangements in case we need to evacuate the building.

SUMMARY:Discovering St Mary's Church\, Luton
DESCRIPTION:A free tour forming part of church’s offering for Heritage Open Days scheme. Booking required via this link. \nSt Marys Church has stood at the heart of Luton for some 1200 years\, the present building for 900 years. Wooden churches stood hereabouts for the first 300 years. Construction of the stone church began in 1121\, its was consecrated in 1135\, and by around 1400 the structure you see now was pretty much in place. \nThe church is Luton’s only Grade 1 listed building\, is regarded as one of the finer medieval churches in England\, and has been described as Luton’s Medieval Jewel. Simon Jenkins notes the church and its surrounding churchyard easily belies the grim surroundings (though things have and are changing) and speaks of the inside as “big white and elegant\, a challenge to its surroundings.” He goes on to say “the two richest periods of English architecture\, the 15th and 19th\, are in glorious harmony.” \nThe tour will take in the main features of the church\, including it’s tiny and rare Barnard Chantry (possibly a “Leper Chapel”); its Baptistry\, one of the finest font canopies in England; the graceful Wenlock Screen; and the beautiful Magnificat Window. There will be plenty of time to ask questions as well as to take pictures both inside and outside the church. \nThe building is very well maintained thanks to major fund raising work of the “Friends of Luton Parish Church” who over the past 50 years have funded major projects as well as ongoing restoration of the stonework. \nThe church is home to a flourishing congregation\, is open for worship on Sundays\, as well as on Wednesday mornings\, and it can normally be accessed by calling at the church office during office hours.
