DESCRIPTION:From its completion around the year 1400\, St Mary’s tower stood way above every other building in Luton. That is no longer the case\, but the view is nearly as good as ever! \nJoin us on one of our three tour climbs during Heritage Open Days 2026.  Climb the 98 step medieval spiral staircase\, enjoy views of much of Luton including views out to the airport\, and see what you can identify.  It’s a great place to view all the progress in the construction of Luton Town FC’s new stadium just over the road on Power Court\, and to see the construction of high buildings all around us! If you have a pair of binoculars it would be well worth bringing them for even better views. \nPlease be there 10 minutes before the advertised time to check in\, and for us to make sure you are fit to make the climb up a 98 step.

SUMMARY:Discovering St Marys Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:St Mary’s Church has stood at the heart of Luton for some 1200 years\, the present building for 900 years. Two\, possibly three\, wooden churches stood hereabouts for the first 300 years. Construction of the stone church began in 1121\, it was consecrated in 1135\, and by around 1400 the structure you see now was pretty much in place. The church was substantially renewed during the late 1800s\, resulting in what Simon Jenkins describes as “the two richest periods of English architecture\, the 15th and 19th\, … in glorious harmony.” \nThe church is Luton’s only Grade 1 listed building\, is regarded as one of the finer medieval churches in England\, and has been described as Luton’s Medieval Jewel. \nThe tour will take in the main features of the church\, including it’s tiny and rare Barnard Chantry (possibly a “Leper Chapel”); its Baptistry\, one of the finest font canopies in England; the graceful Wenlock Screen; and the beautiful Magnificat Window. There will be plenty of time to ask questions as well as to take pictures both inside and outside the church.

DESCRIPTION:From its completion around the year 1400\, St Mary’s tower stood way above every other building in Luton. That is no longer the case\, but the view is nearly as good as ever! \nJoin us on one of our three tour climbs during Heritage Open Days 2026.  Climb the 98 step medieval spiral staircase\, enjoy views of much of Luton including views out to the airport\, and see what you can identify.  It’s a great place to view all the progress in the construction of Luton Town FC’s new stadium just over the road on Power Court\, and to see the construction of high buildings all around us! If you have a pair of binoculars it would be well worth bringing them for even better views. \nPlease be there 10 minutes before the advertised time to check in\, and for us to make sure you are fit to make the climb up a 98 step.

SUMMARY:Discovering St Marys Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:St Mary’s Church has stood at the heart of Luton for some 1200 years\, the present building for 900 years. Two\, possibly three\, wooden churches stood hereabouts for the first 300 years. Construction of the stone church began in 1121\, it was consecrated in 1135\, and by around 1400 the structure you see now was pretty much in place. The church was substantially renewed during the late 1800s\, resulting in what Simon Jenkins describes as “the two richest periods of English architecture\, the 15th and 19th\, … in glorious harmony.” \nThe church is Luton’s only Grade 1 listed building\, is regarded as one of the finer medieval churches in England\, and has been described as Luton’s Medieval Jewel. \nThe tour will take in the main features of the church\, including it’s tiny and rare Barnard Chantry (possibly a “Leper Chapel”); its Baptistry\, one of the finest font canopies in England; the graceful Wenlock Screen; and the beautiful Magnificat Window. There will be plenty of time to ask questions as well as to take pictures both inside and outside the church.

SUMMARY:A Walk in the Park - Stockingstone Meadow & River Lea
DESCRIPTION:A Walk in the Park is a programme of easily accessible walks for all ages running monthly in Luton (every first Wednesday of the month). \nA Walk in the Park provides an opportunity to: \n\nBoost your health and well-being whilst taking a short walk around a natural space and practice some mindfulness in nature.\nExplore green spaces in Luton.\nMeet like-minded people and make new friends.\n\nLearn about the natural world and opportunity to share your own knowledge or experiences. \nThe aim of the programme is to encourage exploration of scenic parks and green spaces right on your doorstep\, at the heart of Luton. \nThe walks will be led by staff of Wildlife Trust Bedfordshire and volunteers. \nAll ages welcome! \nWe will meet at Wardown park to walk along river Lea taking in views of Stockingstone Meadow\, Bide A While\, recently built path by Barnfield college before turning around to walk back to our starting point.  \nAll ages welcome! \nPlease dress for the outdoors\, including suitable footwear for soft paths. \nThe accessibility for this walk can be limited due to uneven/ narrow paths though the fields and woods. Please get in touch if you have any mobility concerns or questions about the walk. \nWe will meet by Wardown House Museum and Gallery (Old Bedford Road\, Luton\, LU2 7HA) for 2.00 PM start\, and return to initial meeting point for 3.30 PM. \nIf using What Three Words website or App then please use the following location ///raft.juror.this for the meeting point \nFor any enquiries please contact Ieva on 07871 987381 or email: ieva.piraga@wildlifebcn.org \n*Please note\, this is a free well-being walk.
