The old ABC Cinema on George Street in Luton Town Centre has a brilliant new look – and it’s turning heads! A stunning mural now covers the Art Deco building, adding another splash of colour to our town.
Award-winning artist Sarah Hodgkins spent 16 days painting the design after more than 1,500 local residents picked their favourite concept. The result? George Street looks livelier than it has in years!
The community-chosen artwork reflects what locals wanted most – something colourful and meaningful to Luton.. Other key themes included adding nature and nods to various art forms like film, music and carnival.

The mural celebrates the building’s Art Deco heritage while giving the street a much-needed boost of energy and character.
Look closely and you’ll spot loads of local touches – a vintage Vauxhall car, nods to the film ‘Blinded by the Light’ which was shot right here on George Street, and a cheeky reference to Luton Town FC’s stadium plans.
An evening scene along George Street West is already becoming a top selfie spot, with an Art Deco lamp lighting up jazz musicians and dancers that give a nod to Luton’s famous carnival.

At the top sits a sunrise with “LUTON” boldly painted – standing for hope and new beginnings while celebrating the town’s mix of cultures.
The project, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is part of ongoing work commissioned by Luton Council to perk up Luton Town Centre.
