Commissioned by Revoluton Arts, this site-responsive, script-in-hand reading shares a 20-minute section of the play in honour of Luton Henge’s new amphitheatre. Taking place on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2026, the event invites audiences to gather, listen, and bear witness in a space rooted in collective making and ancestral memory.
Set in 1653, AWAKEN follows Sarah Spindler, a maidservant on the run after being accused of witchcraft in a society where women’s lives are constrained by fear, superstition, and control. Fleeing into the woods with her trusted companion, Sarah must confront whether escape is possible, or if her destiny has already been claimed. Written in the working-class language of Canting, which predates Cockney, AWAKEN gives voice to the forgotten stories of women, cunning folk, and working-class communities erased from official histories.
The reading is created by a female-led creative team: writer, actor, and producer Cheryl Prince; director and actor Law Ballard; and co-producer and performer Ellie Zeegen. This event celebrates the space, amplifies women’s voices, and encourages dialogue with the local community to shape AWAKEN’s ongoing development.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’ll also host a panel of inspiring women discussing women’s history, wellbeing, and theatre.
A Revoluton Arts project created by Cheryl Prince of 5D Theatre, supported by Arts Council England.
