To celebrate Heritage Open Day we will be opening the doors to the wonderful Walled Garden on a Friday. Visit our unique Capability Brown Designed Walled Garden and its historic service buildings, displays and garden buildings.
The Walled Garden was designed by Capability Brown in the late 1760’s for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, noted Botanist and Prime Minister under George III. The Garden changed and evolved under owners and management to match the fashion of horticulture in the 19th and 20th centuries, with each owner leaving their mark on the garden’s rich history. Today the site comprises a five-acre garden surrounded by the original 18th century octagonal wall, and a range of glass houses, and a selection of rare service buildings.
The garden continues to be revived, repaired, and re-imagined for the enjoyment of all, primarily by volunteer members of the Walled Garden Project. The Project has over a hundred volunteers working in different groups/teams that are focused on various areas depending on their field of interest and expertise: all with the Walled Garden at their heart. The Walled Garden Project is a diverse and dynamic volunteer organisation that operates throughout the year on Wednesdays and Fridays and manages and delivers our ‘Open Wednesdays’ from May to September.
Today to celebrate Heritage Open Day we will open on a Friday. Members of the project will be dressing in their chosen era to reflect the incredible history of the garden. Look out for some unusual costumes and take your time to have a chat about the walled garden today, and through its history. Take your time in the garden, visit the displays and celebrate a little bit of wonderful history, on your doorstep.
