It’s a big year for carnival lovers in Luton as the beloved festival returns home to Wardown Park on 24 May to celebrate their 50th year of culture and colour!
‘Gold’ is the theme for this year’s festivities, which fits right into their anniversary celebrations. Expect a sea of colour when the procession dances through the town centre from Market Hill all the way to Wardown Park, which you can find out more about here.
We’ve even managed to score some illustrations of costume designs that are in-progress. Below are ‘Guardians of the Pitch’ and ‘Guardians of Nature’ by Melissa Simon-Hartman. We can’t wait to see what these look like on the day!

The carnival first started as a Victorian fayre to celebrate Luton’s 100th anniversary of borough status in 1976. Though it looks much different now, it was the beginning of the festival of music and costume as we know it. Many processions in the town as early as 1964 even featured steel bands – perhaps the first glimpse at Caribbean influence in Luton parades.
To highlight the impact that carnival and Caribbean culture has had on Luton over the years, a new community project has been launched. Beyond Luton Carnival 50 aims to “ensure that the spirit of carnival, its creativity, unity, and significance remains alive for the next generation.”
This isn’t the only anniversary they’re celebrating this year, though. 2026 also marks Luton’s 150th anniversary of borough status, which makes carnival just one part of the planned celebrations for the year.
There are plenty more big events planned – keep up to date with all the latest news on our social media or find out more here.
