Twenty years ago, Wellington Street got a whole lot spicier when Papa J’s opened its doors, bringing Indian tapas to Luton for the first time. Now, two decades on, this town centre gem is celebrating a milestone that’s got us feeling not only nostalgic – but hungry too!
We popped in for a chat with Ravi Bhikha, who’s been running the show for the past 16 years, carrying on the legacy his dad Jay started.
“We always aimed to create an environment that mirrors how people eat in Mediterranean cultures—gathering, sharing, and enjoying food. It’s how my father and I learned to appreciate food, breaking bread with locals wherever we travelled.” Ravi told us.
“Luton, with its rich cultural diversity and vibrant town centre, has been the perfect backdrop for our journey. The town’s thriving community and its blend of cultures have allowed us to grow and continuously evolve our concept, resonating well with our customers.”
It’s not hard to see why the concept caught on and it’s clear why it’s consistently ranked among Luton’s best restaurants. Their famous Chapata Wings are still a go-to for many regulars, and the restaurant buzzes with energy most nights.
To celebrate this milestone, Papa J’s has lined up a month of special events:
- Desi Food Fest (21 September) – A celebration of street food with live music and cooking demonstrations to kick off the anniversary events.
- Charity Night (27 September) – A special charity event supporting a local community charity Go Dharmic that Papa J’s has partnered with for years, providing meals to those in need.
- Bollywood Night (12 October) – Papa J’s hosts its first-ever club night. Spicy food meets Bollywood beats for an unforgettable evening of dining and dancing.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or somehow never tried Papa J’s before, there’s never been a better time to get stuck in. Twenty years of innovative flavours, warm welcomes, and Luton spirit – now that’s something to raise a glass too!
