Three key spots in the heart of Luton are set to be transformed with eye-catching artwork, and we’re calling on our local creative talent to help make it happen.

Right in the centre of town, the historic ABC cinema on George Street is getting a creative makeover. Artists can create designs to wrap around the ground floor and steps, plus stunning artwork for the upper façade – bringing some much-needed colour and energy back to this busy part of George Street.

The exciting changes continue at the corner of Mill Street and New Bedford Road, where a bold new mural or print installation will welcome everyone heading into the shops. This busy route into town is set to become a real talking point with artwork that shows off what Luton’s all about.

Down on Guildford Street, new artwork will create an eye-catching entrance to our Hat District. This spot is perfectly placed to celebrate what makes our town special, with the exciting developments of Power Court, The Stage and Luton Point set to transform the area around it.

“There are a few drab and neglected looking spots in the town centre, and this can really affect what people feel when they are in town. We want them to feel uplifted when they see the artwork once it’s been completed and to feel proud of their town.  We want workers and visitors to enjoy their time here too. It’s also important that the works enhance local heritage assets and Luton is celebrated.”

Cllr James Taylor, Portfolio Holder responsible for Regeneration and Inclusive Growth at Luton Council

Thanks to funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we’re able to work with Luton Council to bring these improvements forward quickly while longer-term developments take shape.

If you’re an artist who wants to be part of Luton’s transformation, you have until 9 December 2024 to share your ideas. Simply visit luton.gov.uk and search for ‘Due North Portal’ to apply. Or apply for each opportunity below:

Your work will be reviewed by a panel including representatives from Step Forward Luton, Luton Council, Luton Arts and Culture Strategy Group, Luton Heritage Forum, and local community members.
